- An automotive repair dealer must give a written estimated price for labor and parts before work starts. No work and no charges before you authorize.
- No charge above the estimate without your oral or written consent, obtained after the shop learns the estimate is not enough and before the extra work is done (B&P 9884.9).
- Oral consent must be noted on the work order with date, time, name, phone if any, extra parts and labor, and total extra cost, then noted on the invoice or acknowledged by your signature or initials.
- Body and collision repairs need an itemized written estimate with labor and parts listed separately, each part identified as new, used, rebuilt or reconditioned, and crash parts marked as OEM or aftermarket.

If you cannot resolve a problem with the shop, file a complaint with BAR. BAR mediates many auto repair disputes. Issues outside BAR's authority include repairs done outside California and heavy-duty Class A commercial repairs. (source: Bureau of Automotive Repair)
